ARC NWC developed resources and tools

A-Z resources

The A-Z card game and booklet have been co-produced with Public Advisers. It’s a playful way to start discussions within teams about health inequalities and equity. Hear some of the co-creators tell you about the resources in a 3 minute video here.

You can freely access and download both the Workbook with ideas about games with the cards, and the actual A-Z cards.

Focus On Research & Equity (FORE) web-resource

In collaboration with the NIHR School for Public Health Research in March 2022 we proudly launched the FOR Equity web-resource, which provides web-based tools and resources to help make research evidence more relevant for action to reduce social and health inequalities.

To find out more about the FOR Equity web-resource you can download our flyer

If you missed the launch event you can still watch the recording, hosted in the ARC NWC YouTube Channel
The FOR Equity web-resource can be accessed at: https://forequity.uk/

Health Inequalities Assessment Toolkit (HIAT)

The HIAT is one of the few tools specifically designed to support the integration of an equity lens in research. It was first published in 2015 and it is now in it’s second iteration, including a focus on intersectionality. It is currently hosted on the FOR Equity web-resource (see above), where you can also find a ‘Note taking form’ to help you keep a record of your decisions as you work through each of the five sections of the HIAT and the cycle of research.

Read also about the evaluation of the HIAT: “The Health inequalities assessment toolkit: supporting integration of equity into applied health research”.

HIAT Case Studies

You can access our case studies here.

FORE Thermometer & Screening Tool

The latest addition to the FOR Equity web-resource (see above) are the FOR Equity Thermometer and Screening Tool, which aim to help teams and organisations challenge their equity sensitivity and plan their equity journey. The resources were conceptualised by the HEMS Public Advisers Group and IGOO were commissioned to help with the delivery of the interactive Screening Tool.

Read about the story leading to the development of the resources in a blog by the ARC NWC HEMS lead first published in the ARC NWC Newsletter, October 2023.

Equity Lens Podcast Series

You can find the Equity Lens podcast on YouTube and Spotify. You can also listen to Equity Lens, find out more about the speakers and access bonus clips through the podcast’s pages

Other tools and resources

Health Equity Assessment Tool (HEAT)

The HIAT is one of the few tools of its kind focused on research (rather than policy or practice). However, there are a few more such as the HEAT. For more information on this tool please visit their website: https://www.gov.uk/government/publications/health-equity-assessment-tool-heat.

For more tools that have been developed with the aim of helping researchers apply an equity lens you can explore the FOR Equity Inventory.
