Synthesising and understanding research evidence
RaCES: RAPID CONVERSION OF EVIDENCE SUMMARIES
Our RaCES Projects are a collaboration between ARC NWC Members, the public and MIDAS to rapidly convert evidence syntheses into summaries to inform practice, policy and people’s decisions.
Training Package
We have a structured approach to conducting RaCES using a training package and a template to support professionals in health and social care to carry out the RaCES with our help along the way. The training package provides a step-by-step guide to how to critically appraise a systematic review and write it up in a publishable commentary piece.

Systematic review/evidence synthesis guidance and help
We offer advice sessions online for anybody who works at or is affiliated with any of the ARC North-West Coast members, is carrying out any type of evidence synthesis and would like additional methodological advice.
- Examples of areas for advice could be:
• Peer-reviewing of protocol
• Reviewing of systematic review methods
• Analysis of methods of evidence synthesis (quantitative or qualitative)
• Problem solving of any issues you are currently having with your review
• Defining the research question
• Any aspect of evidence synthesis
The sessions are for one-hour. Appointments can be booked every Friday from 9am to noon. Click here to book your meeting.
It would be helpful if you could send Jehill1@uclan.ac.uk any information you have around your project prior to attending the meeting; this could be, for example, a protocol, your research question, and your current methodological issue.
Literature searching guidance and help
We also offer literature searching advice sessions online for anybody who works at or is affiliated with any of the ARC North-West Coast members.
Sessions are usually for one hour and we can provide advice on issues such as:
• Search methods for systematic and other types of reviews
• Choosing search terms and developing search strategies
• Which databases to search and how to search them
• Downloading search results and using reference management software
• Reporting/writing up search methods
If you need help with searching the literature, please contact charris10@uclan.ac.uk to arrange a session.
