Why our air quality matters – feedback from Old Swan event

On 13th February 2020, 30 people gathered at the Joseph Lappin Centre in Old Swan, Liverpool. Participants included residents and representatives from local authorities, health, third sector organisations and universities. The event took place to launch an animation created by Better Old Swan and to present some of the options for community and professional involvement in tackling poor air quality. There were presentations and lively conversations about:

• The impact of air pollution on health and local health services
• Community involvement in the Old Swan Neighbourhood for Learning
• Resident participation in a Citizen’s Science project
• Air quality action plans in Liverpool City Region and the city of Liverpool
• How individuals can get involved in campaigning for better air quality
• New research being developed in the Applied Research Collaboration North West Coast.

The Old Swan animation is available below.

One professional said the event showed ‘the power of community passion for better place and cleaner air should never be underestimated’. The feedback suggested participants left inspired to take action at work or in their community – one person said ‘I must get more involved, even if it’s just to share some of today’s information with my family, friends and neighbours’.
