Applications are invited for the post of Senior Research Associate as part of the Public Health Intervention Responsive Studies Teams (PHIRST) initiative. PHIRST links up academic teams with local authorities to evaluate work that is happening in local government across the UK with potential to improve health and reduce inequalities.

The role is based at Lancaster University as part of the NIHR funded public health intervention responsive studies teams (PHIRST) initiative and is suitable for someone with qualitative research skills and interests in heath inequalities, community/local government research. A PhD is not essential, but candidates would need to demonstrate equivalent research expertise. It offers a 4+ year funded post with excellent opportunities for career development.

Day to day, your main responsibilities will include conducting and analysing qualitative fieldwork and supporting participatory research activities. You will undertake rapid literature reviews to inform evaluation planning and complete ethical and/or governance approvals. The role will also involve on-going collaboration with colleagues at Lancaster and Liverpool universities, members of the public and local authority staff in order to plan and deliver responsive evaluations. With a background in an area of relevance to public health, you will have experience of conducting research in local government or community settings.

Our team is one of six PHIRSTs funded by the National Institute for Health Research and is led by Professor Ben Barr (Liverpool) and Dr Emma Halliday (Lancaster). Working with a team comprising experienced public health professionals, academics and members of the public, there will also be opportunities for career development, including gaining experience of knowledge exchange in local government settings.

The post will be based within the Division of Health Research at Lancaster University but you will need to be willing to travel anywhere in the UK to attend meetings and conduct research activities (subject to Covid-19 restrictions).

You will join us on an indefinite contract however the role remains contingent on external funding which at this time is due to come to an end on 28th February 2027.
